Penn Memory Center welcomes our patients and their families to Memory Café, our monthly pop-up café. The event that was started in the Netherlands and made its way to the U.S. provides a place for those with memory problems, including Alzheimer’s disease, to gather and socialize without fear of stigma. Activities are held from 10:30 a.m. to noon one day each month, encouraging patients to form bonds and find similarities with one another. Musicians, community partners and performers play a special role in the Memory Cafés, providing entertainment for the patients.
The Curtis Institute of Music is a conservatory in Center City, Philadelphia, where talented musicians gather to study and become musical leaders. Penn Memory Center and students from the Curtis Institute have worked together several times to give patients with memory problems the experience of classical music, either in their homes or at the Memory Café. At the Memory Café, Curtis students play music for 30 minutes, creating a relaxing environment for participants.
Attendance is free, and activities will be held at Christ Church Neighborhood House, 20 N. American Street, Philadelphia, PA. For more information, contact Alison Lynn by phone at 215-360-0257 or by email at alison.lynn@uphs.upenn.edu.
