On April 18, the Penn Memory Center hosted a compelling virtual conversation with Allison Applebaum, PhD, author and founding director of the Caregiving Clinic at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
The discussion centered around her latest book, “Stand by Me: A Guide to Navigating Modern, Meaningful Caregiving.” Drawing from over a decade of clinical expertise and research, along with her personal experiences as the primary caregiver for her father, renowned composer Stanley Applebaum, Dr. Applebaum offered profound insights into the caregiving journey. She underscored the critical role caregivers play as indispensable members of healthcare teams.
During the event, Dr. Applebaum shared practical advice on how caregivers can articulate their needs and seek support effectively.
“One thing I did is that I kept on my phone a running list of things that I needed, from buying necessities for my father to getting food or fixing a leak in the sink,” Dr. Applebaum said. “The list included all the mundane tasks that can become overwhelming when you’re dealing with caregiving. So, whenever someone asked, ‘Can I help you?’ I would say, ‘Yes, actually, I have a list of things.’ Being specific makes it easier to offer and receive help. Also, make sure to include things for yourself, as a caregiver, on that list. It’s important to remember what you need as well.”
